Meet the 2021 Art of Science Judges: Austen Canonica
Understanding Research Photography
Meet Austen Canonica, one of more than a dozen judges for the 2021 Art of Science photography contest. This year's third annual contest allows students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows and staff to showcase their cutting-edge research, scholarship or creative activity. Winners walk away with grand prizes, publications and much more.
Canonica is the assistant director of marketing and communications in the Graduate College, and adjunct professor and marketing assistant in the College of Business. He is also the editor of the Graduate college monthly newsletters, and provides graduate students support with marketing and communications initiatives.
Here is a look at why Canonica said he believes in the importance of capturing research, scholarship or creative activity in images:
"Much of what makes marketing effective is pairing a valuable purpose with aesthetic stimuli. What the FAU Art of Science photography contest allows is for students, faculty and other researchers to showcase their important discoveries through a tool we all love and are familiar with: photography. This gives us a brief, yet powerful glimpse into their world of research and brings us one step closer to a better understanding."
